i missed my big fine art debut last night…so disappointing. eliesa of photogen inc (she also owns rivets and roses) threw a huge party to show off our mad photography skillz and i was stuck in bed all day. all weekend, actually. for those of you who didn’t make the show, here are the images that were selected to represent my work:

this is my friend roxie. she is doing a kickstarter project to get her own ceramic studio. for those of you not familiar with how kickstarter works: let’s say you have a great idea and you need money. you put a plea out there on kickstarter and set a monetary goal and a deadline. if you reach the goal by the deadline you get the money that people have pledged. if you don’t reach your goal you get nothing. zip. nada. roxie is doing kickstarter and she needs about $500 of funding in the next day in order to get her money. i’m offering a free portrait session to a donor in the mpls/st paul area if roxie reaches her goal. come on you guys! back a local artist. this is your chance to do something awesome today!!!!!

the last time i photographed kai was about a year ago at the pine tree apple orchard. he was post-flu shot and graced me with lots of sweet but serious expressions. now that he’s a year older and wiser (not to mention steadier on his little feet!) he’s a regular little ham and we made friends right away. kai is one of those rare children who is a perfect blend of both of his parents. he looks exactly like his mom AND exactly like his dad. i loved kai’s beanie and coat hoodie; he was rocking the hipster look like a champ.

somewhere in a closet in my parents’ house is an old shoebox, covered with contact paper and full of old photographs. the photographs are full of what you’d imagine: school dances, awkward haircuts, regrettable clothing choices. in that stack of photos are a bunch of images of me with my old friends doug and eric when we were about 14 years old. i’ve known doug for as long as i can remember and today was an awesome day because i got to make new photos of doug: this time with his beautiful wife, colleen, and their incredibly adorable children, bella and liam. liam is a tiny little doll with giant eyes and dimples that take over his whole face when he smiles. bella is a feisty ball of energy; already a classic beauty with an air of independence that makes you question whether she really is only four years old. doug and colleen: thanks so much for letting me meet this new version of your family! i can’t wait to see these two grow up.

i was in milwaukee a few weeks ago to photograph a wedding reception for my friends melissa and jamie. it was an incredibly fun time and i promise that there will be photos coming soon from the big party! the morning after the wedding i had about 15 minutes to shot some photos of my friend laura. she is one of the most driven, hard-working, fun-loving, kind, generous and special people i’ve ever known. i think the photos below capture her beauty and the sense of joy she shares with others. laura lives in portland, which is MUCH too far for my liking, but until i get a chance to visit her, i’ll have to make do with looking at pictures of her pretty smile. love you girl!

oh, little cole. this was my third shoot with cole and perhaps my funniest shoot to date. the thing about this kid is that he is incredibly well-behaved, but he isn’t terribly interested in me or my camera. he is a mover and a shaker and he is fascinated by everything around him. this of course presents a challenge: how do i get good photos if my subject won’t look at me? i think after you see these photos you’ll agree that eye contact isn’t everything. for the first half of our session we wandered around the guthrie. or, rather, cole zoomed around the guthrie and i chased after him, hoping to keep up. the second half of our time together was spent sitting in a patch of tall grass by the river. cole plopped right down and spent the next 20 minutes eating leaves and grass and babbling away to himself, ignoring me completely. his parents and i literally could not stop laughing at his constant chattering and singing. please enjoy the following photos and the endless selection of goofy, serious and sweet expressions.

you may remember lindsey and kent from their lovely wedding this past february. i’m happy to say that they’re doing well and they wasted no time working on a new addition to their family! i had a lovely time shooting maternity photos with the two of them and max. max is going to be an excellent big brother and i can’t wait to meet the new baby when he comes along. lindsey wears pregnancy very well and she was a total natural during this session. congrats to the whole family!

sam and john. john and sam. sweeties for the past six years, when both of them were even younger youngsters than they are now. they got married at the beautiful trellis center in stillwater, minnesota and i was overjoyed at all of the pretty things that they made for their wedding day. sam loves beautiful things so much that she had not one, but two dresses! one of the best moments of the day was when sam walked down the aisle in her long, GORGEOUS formal dress. john had no idea that dress #2 existed and the expression on his face was priceless. it goes without saying that i wish these two all the best and i can’t wait to see what’s next for them.

kate and arie got married. twice. sort of. they did their wedding their own way and after all the hub bub quieted down they called me for some photos. their request? some dramatic portraits at the turf club in st. paul and sunset yoga in newell park. having done neither of these things before i was excited for their shoot. my favorite part was definitely the yoga portion of our time together. first of all, these two have some mad skills. they were contorting and bending in ways that i will never master…they even met through yoga. second of all, newell park is beautiful and the perfect setting for a summer evening shoot. kate and arie: you guys impressed me with your awesome yoga mastery and your obvious affection for each other. stay awesome, m’kay?

ps: i generally try to edit out any bugs that work their way into the shoot, but in some of these images you can see about a million gnats and i thought it was kind of awesome how composed they stayed with all the buzzing that was happening. and so, the gnats stayed.

If you’re going to get married outside, the Gustavus Adolphus college campus is the place to do it. These two took a gamble on Minnesota summer weather, but it paid off in a big way. Kristina and Chris were hitched in a beautiful arboretum surrounded by family and friends and the cutest flower girl/ring bearer combo ever. I knew that they were going to be great clients for me when, at our initial consultation, Kristina said that they wanted to have a Patty Griffin song during their ceremony. The music, the sunshine and the happy couple made for a perfect day. Kristina and Chris, I wish you the best in your lives together, and have fun in Italy!

i would like to begin this post by wishing my friend jackie a belated happy birthday. this shoot is all about her big day and i’m so pleased i was there to capture it! jackie is the genius/mastermind/diva/flowerqueen behind munster rose. if you haven’t heard of munster rose it’s because they’re new in town, but not to the floral industry. jackie and her tall, tall husband, mike, moved here this past year after creating gorgeous floral arrangements in madison, wi (go badgers!) for the past 9 years. jackie styled this entire event and it was decorated perfectly. it helps that the whole shebang was held in an absolutely amazing home on the st. croix river. location, location, location people! despite the 100 degree heat, the party was a smash hit and it was so great to photograph all of the details and beautiful flowers that were put together just for this special day. cheers to you, jackie!

there are some things in life that fill you with absolute joy. for me, melissa and jamie’s wedding was one of those things. melissa has been one of my bestest, most wonderfulest friends for almost 9 years and yesterday she married the love of her life. jamie and melissa are honest, beautiful, sincere, gracious…the list goes on and on. having two brides to photograph was AMAZING, as i got to shoot two bouquets, two dresses, two sets of jewelry, etc. you get a bit more chaos with two brides (!) but at the end of the day, watching these two tie the knot and declare their love for each other in front of family and friends was one of the highlights of my life. (side note: ridiculously hard to shoot photos while crying like a baby)

melissa and jamie: i love you both dearly and i could not be happier for you. you make beautiful brides and even more beautiful friends. may you continue to make each other laugh, be kind to each other and find joy in your life together.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

In general, pizza ovens are gas or electric styles or wood models. Coal even been used as a heat source. Wood fired oven pizza is excellent, some, but delicious pizzas can be prepared almost any style pizza oven. Try this incredible new discovery: Cone Pizza!

Another good reason to replace your brush regularly is that the typical toothbrush can have thousands of microbes growing on both the handles and the bristles and these can cause colds, flu, cold sores and even herpes.

little scamps

calvin and leif are cousins. they are both about two and a half years old and they are both active little boys. this translated into what i can say was hands-down one of my most difficult and enjoyable shoots to date. i say difficult because, well, it was TWO BOYS UNDER THE AGE OF THREE. as a child portrait photographer, i obviously see a lot of parents, but this session shed a whole new light on things. i don’t know how you guys do it. you’re saints! these little scamps were as well-behaved as could be, but they got into absolutely everything and i literally ran full speed behind them for over an hour, just trying as hard as i could to get my shots (which i of course managed to do). we were at minnehaha falls and they loved every minute of it. their favorite part was a tie between discovering the mud pile and sliding down the mud pile. these two got so filthy that i’m crossing my fingers that their parents will ask me back calvin and leif: YOU are what being a child portrait photographer is all about. thanks for giving me a run for my money!

we’re going to go ahead and give this post a sub-title of: “laura’s hair” because, really, that’s what these photos are all about. we had an entire photo shoot that pretty much revolved around laura’s luscious brown locks. do you have siblings? i have two sisters. they are both lovely people. we all are, actually, but you know how someone in the family is always the pretty one? that’s laura. my other sister, ann, and i like to joke about how much we can’t stand how photogenic laura is. plus she’s got this hair…genetic lottery i tell ya. i would hate her lots and lots except that she’s a pretty rad sister and she lets me take lots of photos of her and her pretty hair. so, laura, we kind of hate you, but in that way where we actually love you bunches. xoxo.

i’m kind of in love with these two little sweethearts. layla is already a firecracker at 20 months. her GORGEOUS eyes and infectious giggle are going to keep mom and dad on their toes for sure. and then there’s baby aj. i first met this beautiful family when aj was just 7 days old. (check out that post here.) aj was already a sweet soul at 7 days old, but now he is easily one of the happiest babies i’ve ever seen. he grins constantly and it is literally impossible to look at him and his big dimples without smiling back. spending sunday morning with them was a joy and i am so thrilled that i’m going to get to watch this family grow.

artists i love: megan baxter edition

megan baxter is, without a doubt, one of the most talented, organized and mature artists i’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. when we first started working together at a jewelry store i thought she was about 5 years older than i am, but it turns out she wasn’t even 21 years old yet. megan is wise beyond her years and she is one of the only people i know that i would start a business with, no questions asked. she went to the minneapolis college of art and design and is an amazing graphic designer and web guru. she designed my website and we’ve worked together on countless projects. if you need a website, or a logo, or anything lovely at all, i really can’t recommend her highly enough. this girl has BIG things ahead of her. go to her (amazing) website (that she of course designed) right now and get inspired.

holy cow. let me tell you folks: if you go into the woods in spring, you had better be prepared to be eaten alive. especially if you’ve just put on delicious smelling lotion. my lovely mother-to-be, kristen, was radiant and glowing and apparently the minnesota state bird was quite taken with her because every time she stopped moving during this shoot, she was SWARMED with mosquitoes. being a good minnesota girl, however, she was not at all upset by this, and calmly swatted them away with the help of her husband, jackson. kristen is the sister of my best friend lauren and this shoot felt really special because i have known kristen for about 13 years. she’s grown into an absolutely delightful and beautiful woman and i can’t wait to meet her baby.

lindsey and chad got married this past saturday. they are madly in love and you can see it clearly. they had one of the brightest, most lovely weddings i’ve seen, despite the fact that they got rained out and had to switch to an indoor wedding at the last moment. i can honestly say that of all the weddings i’ve been to, this one had the best maid of honor and best man speeches i’ve ever heard. they were sweet, heartfelt and left me with teary eyes. lindsey and chad, i wish you only the best. thank you for choosing me!

i was recently asked to do a fabulous shoot for an up-and-coming fashion boutique called flaunt. they’re so new and so busy that they are still working on getting their site together! the boutique isn’t your normal 10-8 shop with picture windows and small fitting rooms. flaunt is a nomadic shop, operated entirely off of at-home trunk shows. can you imagine? you invite a bunch of friends over for cocktails and the flaunt girls bring racks of clothing to your home. everything is under $100 and they even take credit cards. i’ve been to a flaunt trunk show, and believe me when i say that some of you will be invited to my home for a party later this year. since the owners get new merchandise in each and every week, the idea behind the shoot was to show the kind of clothing and accessories they have, not specific items that are for sale. i’m pretty proud of how these photos turned out and you should all go to facebook right now and “like” the flaunt page. you’ll be glad you did…they’re bringing affordable fashion right to your door!

lauren and i took a trip to duluth last week. we drove north to two harbors and wandered around on the beaches collecting smooth stones and bits of driftwood. we also ate at the scenic cafe. i had a bison pastrami sandwich. if you have 5 hours to spare, i would highly recommend driving to the scenic cafe for lunch. it’s worth it.

i should start this post by saying that i love all my clients. i love them all. BUT, sometimes i meet a little kid that i really REALLY extra love. meet henrik. he is polite, spunky, energetic, well-behaved and, oh, did i mention that he is ADORABLE? look at all of the upper case letters i’m using in this post! i only do that when i’m really excited!

henrik and i played together for an hour and he was an absolute doll. he is not shy in front of the camera at all and he did everything i asked. we went to the park with his mom and we had a heck of a time playing with bubbles in his back yard. i think three-year-olds might be my new favorite age group. can’t wait to photograph henrik again later this summer!

sam and john live in my hometown of white bear lake. they have been dating for six years and they’re still pretty sweet on each other. i met sam when she was…oh…maybe 10 years old? maybe younger? she is a dear friend of my sister laura and i don’t remember how many sleepovers those two had, giggling in the basement and watching the breakfast club. we had to wait a long time to shoot these engagement photos because of the temperamental minnesota weather, but i am so glad we held out for sun. sam and john, i am so excited for your september wedding!

these are the brainiacs behind paper darts, an awesome literary arts magazine based here in minneapolis. i realize that you might have thought that meghan, jamie and regan were models when you first glanced at these photos, but the truth is that they are just incredibly talented women who also happen to be mega beautiful. after paper darts featured the .onethirtyfive. project that i do with my friend christian, the girls and i decided that it was time they get some new promo photos. read ‘em and weep. and then go buy the third volume of paper darts, and, uh, weep. with joy. enjoy!

i’m supposed to be taking a sick day today, due to a cough that just will not leave me alone, but i couldn’t resist posting these photos of britta. britta and emily (yesterday’s post) will be sharing a booth at the ACC show this weekend and i wanted to make sure you all saw her work so that your interest would be sufficiently piqued. britta is another former studio vincent girl, and although she lives in duluth with her husband and their sweet little dog, chica, she shows her work and takes appointments in the twin cities. as the proud owner of a few britta pieces, i can say that you don’t want to miss out on seeing her at the ACC or at art-a-whirl. britta is one of the happiest and most cheerful people i’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. she is not only a talented artist, but one of those people who has a way of making everyone around her feel good. highly recommended by yours truly.

emily and i have been friends for about five years now. we met at studio vincent and immediately bonded over mutual love of all things jewelry. emily has since gone off on her own to start her own company, ec design studio. emily lives in a charming apartment which is decorated from head to toe with curiosities and art that she has collected over the years. my favorite part of her collection is an arrangement of plastic deer that she displays on a series of corner shelves. so strange, yet so wonderful. emily’s designs are subtle, yet edgy and she works in silver as well as precious metals. you can see her this weekend in st. paul at the ACC show and you should look for her at the northrup king building every first thursday of the month, and at art-a-whirl too.

i’ve long been a supporter of local art and living in minneapolis has afforded me the chance to meet some incredible artists over the past few years. with art-a-whirl coming up soon, i decided to do profiles on some of my favorite jewelers in the northrup king building. first up: the lovely and talented karin jacobson. karin is as sweet as she looks, and i love how crisp and fresh her designs are. i invested in a pair of her lotus earrings a couple of years ago and i adore how they go with absolutely everything in my wardrobe. karin works in silver and 14k gold with fair trade gems and lots of pretty sparkle. you can find her in studio 288 during art-a-whirl.

except, it wasn’t morning. it was 5 pm and the light was just starting to fall by the river. remember my friend torey? she photographs so beautifully that i couldn’t pass up an opportunity to capture photos of her sister, haley. haley is a musician, and she is wonderfully talented. i think you should all buy tickets to her cd release show for april 22nd. i’ll be there: you can come say hello!

these are the kind of photos you get when the light is AMAZING, you only have 25 minutes to shoot and you step into the cold water of the mississippi, all while wearing high heels. miracles happen, kids. now sit back, relax and enjoy.

Anika and Justin are pretty cool. Way cooler than I am, for sure. They live in a beautiful apartment in San Francisco, a city which has recently stolen my heart. They are outdoorsy, svelte, artsy people; a diabolical combination. I stayed with them this past weekend to get to know them before their wedding, and we had what I think what can only be described as a marathon of an engagement session. I think we shot for about five hours and we went all over the place. Here are my favorites from the city portion of our shoot. Beach favorites coming soon.
